Introductory Human Identification
Human Identification course (3500 / 3130 Systems) Objective: This course is designed to explore the core techniques required for human identification investigations whilst allowing the opportunity for discussion of the wider implications of this type of analysis. The course uses Applied Biosystems reagents and instrumentation to provide human identification scientists new to ABI PRISM. platforms with the skills necessary to maximise data quality and throughput. This course is aimed at scientists intending to use ABI PRISM. electrophoresis instrument platforms for human identification analysis. The course will use a combination of practical and theory sessions to provide the participants with a thorough grounding in techniques, which can later be enhanced in their own laboratory environment. At the end of the course participants will be able to: Understand the principles of DNA extraction and DNA quantitation Demonstrate an understanding of the optimisation processes required in the development of a fluorescent multiplex PCR system Amplify a variety of DNA samples using the AmpFLSTR. series of PCR kits Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of fluorescent detection including: Instrument design and maintenance Instrument set up and use of Collection Software Sample preparation and electrophoresis Interpret data from simple and complex samples using GeneMapper. ID analysis software Troubleshoot Results.

In collaboration with leading experts in forensic science, we are offering unique opportunities for forensic scientists to learn more about massively parallel sequencing for forensic applications. Massively parallel sequencing has the potential to vastly expand the capabilities of human identification laboratories, enabling simultaneous analysis of a wide range of forensically relevant genetic applications to help resolve challenging cases.
General Course Description
In addition to hands-on wet-lab sessions where you will run through the entire Ion PGM™ Sequencer workflow, the course will include lectures, panel discussions, question and answer sessions with the visiting experts and will focus on how next generation DNA sequencing technologies can expand the capabilities of your forensic lab. The hands-on workflow will be demonstrated for forensic SNP analysis for ancestry prediction, STR and mtDNA sequencing approaches and data analysis, depending on specific focus area of the selected course.
• The entire forensic workflow with the Ion PGM™ Sequencer
• Sample preparation, library construction, sequencing, data analysis and interpretation
• Hands-on lab sessions for NGS based forensic DNA typing
• Approaches for SNP, STR and mtDNA sequencing and data analysis (see course overview below)
The Human Identification PGM Forensic Schools are offered at our Thermo Fisher Scientific Darmstadt Training Center in Darmstadt, Germany in collaboration with visiting experts as outlined below:
Each Human Identification Ion PGM™ Forensic School is designed as a 3-day training course, starting at lunchtime on the day of arrival and finishing after lunch on the third day.

Who should attend?
No prior knowledge of next generation sequencing is required for this course. It is designed for forensic scientists who are familiar with routine forensic DNA analysis with capillary electrophoresis and are interested in learning how next generation sequencing can help solve cases.
Participants will receive a certificate from Thermo Fisher Scientific HID University, as proof of attending the Human Identification Ion PGM™ Forensic School 3-day training course.
Costs: 600 € net including laboratory reagents, consumables, course materials and lunch.
Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.
Travel and accommodation and other incidental expenses relating to the course are the responsibility of the attendee. We can recommend accommodation.
